What are Attention Deficit Disorders?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When a child cannot sustain attention on a task or acts out of turn, they may have a form of attention deficit disorder. There are two main types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One is where a problem occurs, withholding attention. This type is called attention deficit disorder (ADD). The second presentation is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD adds a component of overactivity. Children who are hyperactive may not be able to sit for long periods of time, they may talk out of turn, and they may get in trouble at school for not following the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ADD, ADHD, and therapeutic treatments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to Kids Health, PT can help \u201cdecrease pain, improve movement, and help kids return to daily activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many doctors will recommend physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy as a combined treatment plan for young children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. Our integrated care team will use several techniques to encourage the child to control his or her behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By working with you and your child\u2019s primary care doctor, our OTs and STs can build a combined treatment plan for your child diagnosed with ADD or ADHD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our team can suggest alternate behaviors to use in different situations. For instance, through physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, a child with ADD or ADHD can discover a healthy way to cope when the urge strikes to act out in a disruptive manner<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our services are also useful for children who are struggling socially. Children with ADD or ADHD children may have difficulty interacting with their peers and have the inability to make lasting friendships. Our integrated care team may meet one on one with the child or set up a peer group with a small number of kids diagnosed with the same disorder. Peer groups allow children to interact under the supervision of a therapist who can provide feedback on conflict resolution and practicing good social skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, through a combined treatment plan, a child with ADD or ADHD can learn skills to stay on track when they get distracted or when they are completing a task that does not have their full interest or attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental factors in behavior<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Parent involvement is essential for the combined treatment methods to work. Our team can educate parents on how creating a structured environment will help keep the child on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some actions you can take at home to promote healthy and positive behavior with your child include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n
