But did you know that a special type of therapy can help them develop those skills effectively? Occupational therapy for autism can teach your child how to manage day-to-day life, from brushing their teeth to interacting at school.

Autism spectrum disorder (also known as ASD or simply autism) is a complex disorder that affects how someone views and interacts with the world. It is both neurological and developmental, and symptoms can vary wildly–meaning every person’s experience with the condition differs.

Broadly speaking, autism can cause difficulties with communication and social interaction, as well as repetitive or restrictive behaviors (often brought on by sensory issues). However, people with autism are also quick learners and often excel in subjects like math, science, music, and art.

The occupational therapists at Go Physical Therapy Children's Rehab Center have a strong understanding of both the strengths and limitations of living with autism. We’ll design a program that suits your child’s unique needs while helping them manage any daily activities they may struggle with.

Want to learn more about how occupational therapy can help your child thrive? Keep reading–or schedule an appointment at our Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney or Lincoln, NE clinic to talk to one of our friendly, knowledgeable therapists!

What is Occupational Therapy, and Why Would Someone with Autism Benefit?

Occupational therapy is a field of healthcare focused on helping people perform the everyday tasks they need and want to do. Occupational therapists can help people with grooming, everyday chores, and recreational activities. Pediatric occupational therapists also help children improve fine motor skills, develop the social skills necessary for school and play, or set and achieve personal goals.

While children with autism usually don’t have physical limitations, they can still benefit immensely from occupational therapy. Several of the symptoms of autism can make day-to-day living challenging, such as the following:

Difficulty maintaining eye contact when speaking to others, which can hamper social interaction

Struggling with the back-and-forth nature of conversations (including “monologuing” at people they’re talking with)

Difficulty interpreting body language, emotions, or figures of speech

Severe sensory issues, which can affect which foods they’re willing to eat or the types of clothing they’re willing to wear

Intense difficulty adjusting to changes in routine to the point that they lash out or throw a tantrum

Becoming overly focused on a specific interest to the detriment of other subjects

Stimming, which consists of small, repetitive movements that provide self-stimulation

Children with severe autism will exhibit these and other symptoms to the extreme. For example, a child with moderate autism might struggle to talk to others and make friends, but a child with severe autism may not be able to communicate with speech at all. A child with moderate autism can likely function in a mainstream classroom (perhaps with some modifications). In contrast, for a child with severe autism, a mainstream classroom would be far too overwhelming.

Occupational therapy can help children with all levels of autism thrive in a way that works for them. We’ll help them develop strategies that address their specific challenges–whatever they may be–and implement those strategies effectively.

Occupational Therapy Strategies for People with Autism

Occupational therapy for autism aims to help autistic people successfully navigate the world. It’s not about “curing” autism (a condition that has no cure) but giving your child the tools they need to thrive, grow, and live a rich, healthy life on their terms.

We tailor all of our occupational therapy programs to each child, so no two plans will ever look the same. However, here are a few examples of strategies we might suggest:

Address Sensory Issues: Our therapists can create a “sensory diet” to help your child not feel over- or underwhelmed. We’ll help them develop strategies for when they start to feel understimulated (such as dancing or singing) or too overstimulated (such as reading or listening to music).

Find New Ways to Communicate: If your child struggles to communicate with words, we can show them alternative methods of communication, such as using communication boards or speech-to-text devices. We can also help children with more moderate symptoms better interpret body language and other gestures.

Get Ready for School: Because of sensory issues, school is often challenging for autistic children. Our therapists can help by developing a special “get ready for school” sensory circuit to help your child either energize or settle down before they start their day.

Navigate Social Situations: This is one of the major challenges for many autistic kids, especially kids with mild symptoms. We’ll help your child develop strategies to better navigate social situations–such as looking at someone’s nose bridge as a way to “fake” eye contact or practicing taking turns in a conversation.

It’s difficult to say the exact strategies we’ll utilize for your child, as it all depends on your child’s needs. One thing our therapists will do is focus on your child’s strengths, not their weaknesses. By helping them identify where they excel, they’ll be more equipped to find solutions for areas where they struggle.

Ready to Get Started?
