Yet, when it came to writing those stories down, Emily struggled. She had several handwriting challenges that made it difficult for her to express her thoughts on paper\u2013and to keep up in class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emily&#8217;s parents noticed her difficulties and sought help from the <a href=\"https:\/\/gopt.us\/childrensrehabcenter\/our-team\/\">pediatric occupational therapists<\/a> at Go Physical Therapy Children's Rehab Center. We performed a comprehensive assessment and determined that Emily had weak hand muscles that impacted her fine motor skills, making it hard to control a pencil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, improving fine motor skills is one of the key things our occupational therapist can do! We helped Emily improve her hand strength through engaging activities and targeted exercises using therapy putty and art clay. Over time, her handwriting became clearer and more consistent. She gained confidence and now keeps a notebook full of her stories. Here are a few additional handwriting-related issues we frequently see in our clinic, plus some insight into the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/1440-1630.12626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">methods we use to address them:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Poor Pencil Grip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many children struggle to hold a pencil correctly, which can cause discomfort and make writing difficult. Often, the reason is underdeveloped hand and finger muscles. We can show your child exercises to strengthen these muscles, improving grip and control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fine Motor Skill Delays<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your fine motor skills involve small movements of the hands and fingers. When these skills are weak, writing can be slow and labored. Activities like threading beads or using tweezers can enhance these skills, making writing easier and more fluid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visual-Motor Integration Problems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visual-motor integration is the ability to coordinate what the eyes see with what the hands do. Children with these problems might write letters that are too big, too small, or poorly spaced. To improve this coordination, we\u2019ll use fun activities like drawing and tracing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sensory Processing Problems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some children are extra sensitive to the physical sensation of a pencil or paper, which can make writing an unpleasant task.
