What support is available? What therapies can help? However, one evidence-based treatment that can make a big difference is occupational therapy for autism.

Occupational therapy (OT) focuses on helping kids build the skills they need to participate more fully in daily life at home, at school, and in the community. It’s a great choice for managing some of the challenges that can arise with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which affects how children communicate, play, and navigate daily routines.

Unfortunately, autism is a rather misunderstood condition, and there are many myths about what it is and how to manage it. Today, the Go Physical Therapy Children's Rehab Center team wants to address some of those myths and share more about how occupational therapy might benefit your child.

Four Myths About Autism and Occupational Therapy

Myth #1: Occupational Therapy is Only About Teaching Job Skills

Reality: Despite the name, occupational therapy isn’t just for adults or job training. “Occupation” in this sense refers to all the little activities we need and want to do each day–essentially, what keeps us “occupied.” For kids, that encompasses everything that makes up childhood, including:

Playing with peers

Getting dressed

Eating meals

Following classroom routines

And many more!

Occupational therapy for autism focuses on helping children develop the physical, emotional, and cognitive skills to manage these activities more independently. Our OTs use fun, play-based activities to improve fine motor control, sensory processing, or attention skills, all customized to a child’s specific needs.

Myth #2: Kids with Autism Just Need to Learn to Behave Better

Reality: Kids with autism are not simply “misbehaving.” Behaviors like meltdowns, avoidance, or sensory seeking have deeper roots, stemming from differences in how kids’ brains process information from the world around them. What you might see as a minor inconvenience–bright lights, itchy clothes, loud noises, or changes in routine–can be unbearable to a child with autism.

That’s why occupational therapists help kids understand their own sensory needs and learn self-regulation strategies, such as deep breathing or playing with a fidget tool. We also work with kids to practice routines and transitions in manageable steps.

These tools can significantly reduce anxiety and frustration, leading to fewer behavioral outbursts and a greater sense of confidence.

Myth #3: Therapy Should Focus Only on Communication

Reality: Occupational therapy ideally is part of a multidisciplinary care plan that also includes other specialties, including speech therapy.

Communication is an important piece of autism care, and the speech-language pathologists at Go Physical Therapy Children's Rehab Center play a key role in helping your child find their voice. However, occupational therapy has an entirely different focus, looking at how physical, social, and emotional factors influence participation in daily life.

For example, our OTs can help a child who:

Can’t tolerate certain textures during meals

Avoids using utensils due to poor fine motor skills

Struggles to sit still long enough for a classroom lesson

By addressing these challenges, occupational therapy supports success across all areas of life, including communication.

Myth #4: Occupational Therapy for Autism is a One-Size-Fits-All Approach

Reality: Our approach to OT is highly personalized and designed to emulate playtime. We recognize that every child with autism is unique, and their therapy should reflect that. For that reason, we create individualized treatment plans based on:

Developmental level

Strengths and interests

Family goals

Current routines and challenges

Our approach is play-based because play is how children learn best. But behind the fun is a purposeful plan designed to build practical, lasting skills.

Helping Kids Thrive with Occupational Therapy

Research consistently supports the benefits of occupational therapy for autism, especially when started early. Kids can learn to manage sensory input, build motor skills, and participate in daily routines with greater ease.

At Go Physical Therapy Children's Rehab Center, our pediatric occupational therapists specialize in helping children with autism reach their full potential. We work closely with families to understand each child’s needs and tailor therapy accordingly.

If your child is struggling with daily routines, sensory sensitivities, or social skills, contact our Kearney, NE, Hastings, NE, Grand Island, NE, and Lincoln, NE clinic today to learn more about how occupational therapy can help.

When a child is diagnosed with autism, families often face a whirlwind of information and questions.
