Supporting Your Child with a Chromosomal Disorder
Pediatric Therapy at Go Physical Therapy Children's Rehab Center
Chromosomal disorders are a type of genetic condition affecting a child’s development. Our team of pediatric therapists understands the unique challenges children with chromosomal disorders face. We offer comprehensive support to help children reach their full potential and live fulfilling lives.
Understanding Chromosomal Disorders
Chromosomes are the microscopic structures within cells that carry genetic information. Normally, humans have 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs. Chromosomal disorders occur when the structure or number of chromosomes is abnormal. These abnormalities can cause a variety of developmental delays and challenges.

Types of Chromosomal Disorders
There are three main types of chromosomal abnormalities:
Trisomy
Having an extra copy of a chromosome (three instead of two). Down syndrome is the most common example.
Monosomy
Missing a chromosome altogether (only one instead of two). This is rare and often incompatible with life.
Abnormal Chromosome Structure
A piece of a chromosome may be missing, duplicated, or relocated, leading to gene function problems.
How Pediatric Therapy at Go Physical Therapy Children's Rehab Center Can Help
While there’s no cure for chromosomal disorders, pediatric therapy plays a vital role in supporting a child’s development and improving their quality of life. Here’s how different therapy disciplines can contribute:
Physical Therapy (PT):
- PTs focus on improving a child’s gross motor skills, such as walking, running, and balance. They may utilize exercises, therapeutic techniques, and adaptive equipment to enhance mobility and independence.
Occupational Therapy (OT):
- OTs help children develop the fine motor skills necessary for daily activities like dressing, self-feeding, and handwriting. They can also recommend adaptive tools and strategies to promote independence in self-care tasks.
Speech-Language Pathology (SLP):
- SLPs address communication challenges that may arise due to a chromosomal disorder. They can also evaluate and address swallowing difficulties, ensuring safe and efficient feeding practices.
We create individualized therapy programs based on your child’s specific needs and goals. Here’s what sets our approach apart:
Play-Based Learning
We create a warm and welcoming environment where therapy sessions are fun and engaging. Therapists target developmental skills through play-based activities while fostering a love for learning and a sense of accomplishment.
Family-Centered Care
We believe parental involvement is crucial. We work closely with families to provide education, training, and support to carry over therapeutic strategies into your child’s daily routine.
Collaboration with Medical Team
We collaborate with your child’s pediatrician, geneticist, and other specialists to ensure a cohesive care plan that addresses all aspects of your child’s well-being.
