What is Rett Syndrome?

While the cause remains under investigation, Rett syndrome is a genetic disorder impacting the brain’s development. Symptoms typically begin between 6 and 18 months, with developmental regression including loss of purposeful hand use, speech, and social interaction. However, each child’s experience with Rett syndrome is unique.

What Our Team of Pediatric Therapists Can Do to Help

At Go Physical Therapy Children's Rehab Center, we create individualized therapy plans that address each child’s specific needs with Rett syndrome. Our team of occupational, speech-language, and physical therapists works collaboratively to provide holistic support. Here’s how each discipline can contribute:

Occupational Therapy:

  • Maintaining Hand Skills: OTs utilize play-based activities and targeted exercises to help children with Rett syndrome maintain or improve hand function.
  • Sensory Processing: Some children with Rett syndrome may experience sensory sensitivities. OTs can introduce sensory integration techniques to help them manage these sensitivities and participate more comfortably in daily activities.
  • Maximizing Independence: OTs can recommend assistive technology and strategies like using specialized feeding tools, communication devices, or adapted clothing to enhance self-care skills and participation in daily routines.

Speech-Language Pathology:

  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can help children with Rett syndrome express themselves effectively through picture boards, communication apps, or other tools that best suit each child’s needs and abilities.
  • Social Communication Skills: SLPs can work with children to develop social interaction skills despite difficulties with spoken language.
  • Oral Motor Skills: Some children with Rett syndrome may have difficulty with oral motor skills like chewing and swallowing.

Physical Therapy:

  • Maintaining Mobility: Physical therapists (PTs) can design exercises to improve or maintain muscle strength, flexibility, and range of motion to prevent contractures, promote balance, and ensure good posture for optimal comfort and function.
  • Positioning and Assistive Devices: PTs can recommend appropriate positioning techniques and assistive devices like adapted wheelchairs or standing frames to ensure proper body alignment and support weight-bearing activities.
  • Respiratory Support: For children with Rett syndrome experiencing breathing difficulties, PTs can develop breathing exercises and positioning strategies to improve respiratory function.
