Specialized Treatment to Improve Visual Perception Difficulties
Have you ever put together a puzzle or played a word search game? Both activities challenged your visual perception–your ability to understand and interpret visual information. Visual perception is critical in daily life, helping us read and write, interact with objects, and avoid balance issues. So, when someone has difficulties with visual perception, it can have a big impact.
The good news is that both children and adults can improve their visual perception through occupational therapy at Go Physical Therapy Children's Rehab Center. Our team of experts will create personalized programs adapted to your specific challenges, helping to ensure lasting results.
Don’t let a visual perception difficulty shape your life. Schedule an appointment at our Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney or Lincoln, NE clinic today!

Understanding Visual Perception
Visual perception isn’t really one skill; it’s a set of them. Together, these skills allow our brain to parse visual stimuli and respond appropriately. Here are some of the underlying abilities present in visual perception (although not all of them):
- Visual discrimination allows us to discern similarities and differences in size, shape, or pattern.
- Visual-motor integration allows us to use feedback from the eyes to coordinate movement elsewhere in the body.
- Visual-spatial relationships allow us to understand the relationship between ourselves, other people, and objects in the environment.
- Visual memory allows us to recall visual traits from an object or person.
It’s not always clear why someone develops visual perception difficulties. Most people are born with these difficulties, with symptoms arising in childhood. However, adults can develop visual perception challenges after a brain injury or stroke.
Customized Treatment Plans For Excellent Results
Because visual perception involves a complex interplay of different skills, not everyone who struggles with it does so in the same way. This is why we always create personalized care plans based on your age, goals, and current strengths and weaknesses.
Our care plans will generally consist of activities to improve visual prescription. Some of these activities might surprise you! They include things like puzzles, board games, video games, and craft activities. We can also train you on challenging day-to-day activities like grooming or performing household chores.
In addition to your targeted training, we can provide you with strategies to better manage visual perception difficulties. For example, we can help you set up your workspace so it isn’t visually cluttered or develop techniques for managing visual overwhelm.
